I plan to keep this edition short and sweet—just like the topic of discussion: Tootsie Rolls. In this issue, I hope you’ll learn a bit about the origins of this classic treat and how a small snack made a mighty impact on history.
Small Beginnings
In 1884, Leo Hirshfield, an Austrian confectioner, immigrated to the United States. By 1896, his small New York-based candy shop had grown in popularity, and he began producing a chewy, chocolate-flavored candy named after his daughter Clara, whose nickname was "Tootsie." The candy's unique texture—a blend of taffy and caramel—set it apart from other confections of the time. Tootsie Rolls became the first individually wrapped penny candy, making them easy to sell and distribute. The novelty of the candy fueled Hirshfield’s production boom, leading him to merge with another New York-based candy company, Stern & Staalberg. By 1922, the newly formed "The Sweets Company of America" (now "Tootsie Roll Industries") had become so successful that it reached the New York Stock Exchange. Although Hirshfield passed away in early 1922, his legacy lives on, with Tootsie Rolls now sold in over 75 countries worldwide.
A Sticky Situation
During the Korean War, Tootsie Rolls played an unexpected but crucial role in aiding American troops. In 1950, U.S. Marines fighting in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir found themselves surrounded by enemy forces in freezing conditions. Running low on supplies and ammunition, they radioed for more "Tootsie Rolls"—their codename for mortar shells. Due to a misunderstanding, actual Tootsie Roll candies were airdropped instead. Although the candy couldn’t replace ammunition, it became an essential survival resource. The Marines discovered that the chewy, long-lasting candy provided much-needed calories in the harsh cold. Additionally, the malleable texture of Tootsie Rolls allowed them to patch bullet holes in fuel lines and equipment, as the candy hardened in freezing temperatures to seal the leaks. This unexpected use contributed to the Marines’ perseverance and ultimate escape, turning Tootsie Rolls into a legendary symbol of ingenuity and survival.
