Lesson Forty-Seven

The House of Saud

Dear History Enthusiasts,

This week, we’ll be exploring the fascinating history of one of the most powerful dynasties in the world: the House of Saud.

The Rise of a Kingdom

The House of Saud traces its origins back to the 18th century in the Arabian Peninsula. In 1744, Muhammad ibn Saud, the leader of the small town of Diriyah, allied with Islamic reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab(the founding father of Wahhabism). This partnership laid the foundation for the First Saudi State, uniting local tribes under a strict interpretation of Islam. However, the state was short-lived—defeated by the Ottoman Empire in 1818.

Despite setbacks, the Saudis re-emerged in the 19th century, only to be overthrown again in 1891 by the rival Rashidi dynasty. It wasn't until 1902 that a young Abdulaziz Ibn Saud recaptured Riyadh, marking the beginning of the modern Saudi state. During World War I, the British, eager to weaken the Ottoman Empire, supported Abdulaziz with money and weapons, helping him consolidate control over central Arabia. By the 1920s, helped by British support and military success, Abdulaziz defeated his rivals unifying the Arabian Peninsula, establishing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

Oil and Power

The discovery of oil in the 1930s transformed Saudi Arabia into an economic powerhouse. This newfound wealth enabled the family to quickly modernize the country, maintaining strict political and religious control. Today, the House of Saud remains at the center of global geopolitics, balancing modernization efforts with deep-rooted traditions.

Until next time, remember to embrace the lessons of history, but never get caught up in its cobwebs.

Warm regards,

Hugh
